Obituary For Albert A. Groat, DDS
Dr. Albert Anthony Groat, D.D.S., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated community member, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2025, in Sonora, California, just two days shy of his 92nd birthday.
Albert was born on April 7, 1933, in Heartwell, Nebraska, and spent his early childhood in Sonora, California. During World War II, his family relocated to Oakland, where Albert attended and graduated from St. Elizabeth’s High School. He went on to attend Santa Clara University for his undergraduate studies and later graduated from Creighton University School of Dentistry in 1958.
It was in Omaha, Nebraska, that Albert met the love of his life, Kathleen Anne Emanuel. They were married in 1958 and soon after returned to California, where Albert proudly served in the
U.S. Navy at Alameda Naval Air Station from 1958 to 1961.
After his military service, Albert and Kathleen settled in Fremont, California, where he established a thriving dental practice that served the community with warmth and excellence until his retirement in 2000. A true professional with a gentle spirit, Albert’s care extended beyond dentistry — he built meaningful relationships with patients that often lasted generations, and to his son, Dr. David A. Groat continued the family practice.
Albert was deeply involved in his community. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and a dedicated leader within the Boy Scouts of America, where he mentored young people and exemplified the values of service and integrity.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Kathleen, and his parents, Roland and Mary Groat. He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and family that will endure for generations.
Albert is survived by his four sons: Dr. David (Terri) Groat D.D.S., Chris (Sandy) Groat, John Groat, and Michael Groat. He was a proud grandfather to Elizabeth (Jared), Patrick (Mackenzie), Jason, and Alex. His influence continues in the lives of his grandchildren, especially in Patrick, who will carry on the family’s dental legacy into the third generation.
Services will be held at Fremont Chapel of the Roses and Holy Spirit Church, in Fremont, CA where family and friends will gather to celebrate a life well lived and a man deeply loved.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a dental charity or youth organization of your choice, in honor of Albert’s lifelong dedication to healing and mentorship.
