Obituary For Albert Norman Frederick

Albert Norman Frederick was born on September 22, 1930 at home on Prospect Avenue in Revere, MA, to Mildred Louise Sylvester and James Arthur Leslie Frederick. Al was the youngest of five children. His parents and siblings, Mil, Vi, John, and Dot, all predeceased him. He is survived by his eldest son, James, and wife, Linda, and their son, Jason. He is also survived by his middle son, Kenneth, and wife, Maria, and Ken’s children: Rachel and husband, Chris Kelley, and their daughters Nora and Tatum Kelley; and Ken’s son, Andrew, and his wife, Charissa, and Maria’s children: Marcela and Taylor Means. He is also survived by his youngest son, Robert, and fiancé, Samantha Mackey, and her daughter, Meghan Wilson. In addition, he is survived by many nieces and nephews and his adopted Tucson dog, Cosmo.

He served nearly four years in the U.S. Air Force from 10/15/1948 to 05/19/1952. He spent two years in Alaska, driving an ambulance, before being transferred to Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert town of Edwards, CA.

It was during this time that he and a buddy drove to Frederic Street in Burbank, CA, where he met a pretty brunette, Billie Marie Frazier. After a whirlwind courtship, Al and Billie were married on 10/17/1952 in the Methodist Chapel in Burbank that Billie helped to build. They had three sons: James, Kenneth, and Robert. They had been married a little over 61 years until her passing on 01/12/2014.

They lived in Saugus, MA, and in Southern CA, before moving to their home on Cherry Street in Newark, CA. He lived there from 07/04/1960 until 07/2021. In early 2021, Al moved in part-time with his eldest son, Jim. Later that same year, he sold his home and moved in with his youngest son, Bob, in Tucson, AZ.

Al worked at Varian for over 31 years as a maintenance mechanic from 01/25/1960 to 03/08/1991. For many years, he bought older cars, fixed them up, and sold them for profit. In addition, he loved to grow and give away fresh produce from his garden. He was always the “go to” guy on his street, who could help his neighbors solve their home and car problems and lend them the tools with which to make the repair.
