Obituary For Barbara A. Pifer

Our strong and fiercely independent mother passed away peacefully in her home on December 22, 2021 at the age of 90. She is survived by her two daughters, Linda Schork of Louisville, KY, Diana Atkins of Brentwood, CA, son in laws Paul and Kevin, her grandchildren Matthew, Jacob, and Jillian who she was incredibly proud of, her sister Marion Ferguson and niece Claire. Mom also had a much loved “3rd daughter “Diana Farmer.

She had a wonderful childhood growing up “dunes away “from the ocean in Seaside, CA. With the support of her cherished parents, Ralph and Margaret Castro, she excelled in math and was a proud graduate of Monterey HS class of 1949. Mom went on to Monterey Peninsula College then her beloved CAL. Strongly patriotic, she became a wave in the Naval Reserve. While attending CAL, the opportunity of a lifetime presented when she was hired by the American Red Cross. This provided her the world travel she dreamed of. Mom met our dad while both were stationed overseas, 2 daughters eventually rounded out the family. A move to Fremont, in 1967 sparked a new chapter with a career at the Fremont police department. In 1970 she started as a reserve police officer, championing equal opportunities for female officers, and then became a Detention Technician and supervisor in the jail. Mom was an A’s season ticket holder, 49er fan, and was always in the stands for her daughter sporting events. We appreciate all the love and support from many friends in our time of grief.

A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, January 11th, at 11 am, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 43148 Mission Blvd., Fremont. A private burial will be held on January 12th. Donations can be made in her memory to the Monterey Bay Aquarium or any animal rescue.
