Obituary For Barbara Joan Hatton

Barbara Joan, an only child, was born to Carl and Josephine Werner on October 31, 1932 in Oakland, California. She grew up in Oakland and attended Oakland High. Eventually she went on to attend Lux Business College in San Francisco. She met her husband Earl John Hatton, and they married in 1952 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Oakland. After settling down with her husband, they went on to have 5 children together: Steven, Carleen, Gregory, Bradley, and Bonnie. Eventually their family grew to include Steven, their grandson, and Michelle, their granddaughter. In addition, the family eventually included Gavin and Carter, their great-grandchildren. Barbara died after a brief illness on August 25, 2014.

Of her many talents, Barbara was also proficient as a top notch fly caster, competing in national tournaments and following in her father’s footsteps, who was also well known in this field. She was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing, crafting, and many of the home arts while caring for their children during their school-age years.

After raising their children, she went to work outside of the home for the Xerox Corporation and retired from the company. Barbara also cared for her husband, Earl, during the last few years of the marriage while he was suffering from an illness that demanded much of her time and energy. He died in 2004.

It is often said that when a woman turns 50 she puts on a red hat and a purple dress… and joins a Red Hat Chapter, which she did. This brought on a new meaning to her life! She enjoyed entertaining her Red Hat group(s) in her lovely home in Fremont. She was the ultimate party planner.

Barbara was an active member of Our Lady’s Guild at Our Lady of the Rosary in Union City. She participated in many of the Guild functions and activities in support of the Church. She was also a member of the Lovely Ladies Croquet Club at Ardenwood Historic Farm and the Fremont Elks Lodge.

She will long be remembered for her lovely smile and vibrant personality, her gracefulness, her gentle demeanor, her style, and flair for fashion. Her presence was a gift to everyone she met. She was the embodiment of the perfect woman, wife, mother, and friend.

A 10:00 am rosary followed by a 10:30 am Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 19th at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church located at 703 C Street, Union City, CA 94587.

Dear Family of my Dear friend Barbara, Your Mom was such a great woman. She lived life to the fullest. Barb worked for me at Xerox for years. We always celebrated our birthdays together with a nice dinner at the Fish Market in Sunnyvale. I had her birthday card in my hand a few days ago but then put it back. The thought crossed my mind that I didn't hear from her lately. Today Brad called Jeff's number that he found in her address book to tell us that she was in Heaven. We were sad to hear about this. My husband, Jeff and I met Barb and friends at Capitola for picnics on the grassy area. That picnic had a name and those of you that were there, knew what it was. Barb often talked about her best friend Jan and a story about her green shorts. We had the opportunity to stay in Barbara's condo a few times with her and some with our family. It was a good memory. I appreciated her kind and gentle ways. She kept herself steady and calm especially having five children. Barb spoke well of all her children and grand children. I know she will be missed greatly. Heaven got a special person and her name was Barbara. I'm sure Earl was waiting for her with open arms. We send big hugs to you all. Jeff and Diann Burke Santa Clara, Ca.

Hatton Family, We are so Sorry to hear about your mother. You are truly a great family always there to help out our Mom Alice when she needed your help while living across the street from you all. Living in Hayward as we grew up as kids who would have known we both ended up in Fremont as well living across the street from one another. Best wishes and our sincere sympathy from the Angeles and Ruiz families.
