Obituary For Bruce Alan Williamson

Bruce Alan Williamson, a long-time resident of the Bay Area, passed away peacefully at Kaiser Permanente Fremont, with friends at his side, on June 22, 2025, just shy of his 79th birthday.

Bruce was born July 4, 1946, in Johnstown, Ohio, and was raised in Huntington, West Virginia and Columbus, Ohio. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Kalamazoo College and obtained a master’s degree from Pepperdine University. He lived in Colorado, Texas and New Mexico before moving to California, including his beloved La Honda region, for the remainder of his life.

A life-long learner, reader, writer and educator, Bruce had his own communications marketing firm, BAW Creative Services, was the author of several children’s books, and conducted workshops to help others experience the joy and fearlessness of reliving the youth and freedom of a child. He loved tutoring, helping many others with computer literacy and technology consulting. His love of animals and pets later translated to a pet sitting business, which gave him great satisfaction in his retirement years. His late cat, Sam, was a particular treasure in his life and was greatly missed.

One of Bruce’s joys throughout his life was singing and sharing his strong and steady voice with choral groups throughout the area. He was truly interested in everyone he met, and will be remembered for his warmth, kindness and curiosity.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Vance and Pauline (Williams) Williamson, of Columbus, Ohio. He is survived by a brother, David (Diane) Williamson of Waynesville, North Carolina; his first wife, Claire Paul; and many loving friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an animal rescue of choice.

I met Bruce in a poetry group on The Raft and then developed a friendship that was profound. We never met in person, never knew each other well in terms of specific details, but trusted each other deeply. I can't believe he went from us so suddenly after such a period of renewed hope. I give thanks for his loving presence, his playfulness, that "radio voice," his kindly spirit that glowed in unity with the light we all have. Bless you, Bruce, for blessing my life with words and silences from across the country. Deep peace.

I, too, met Bruce in the same poetry group. He was a lovely, gentle soul, kind, passionate and funny. His absence leaves a hole in our community, but we will carry his memory with us. Rest in peace, Bruce.

I met Bruce via a poetry group (The Raft). He was always such a light, sharing poems that "knocked him out" - Wendell Berry in particular. I share this in honor of Bruce today: The Peace of Wild Things When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
