Carol was born May 6, 1946 and entered eternity March 2, 2021. Preceded in death by her husband Morris of 48 years. She survived by brother William Izatt, sister Lori Schooley, brother in-law Scott, nephew Grant Schooley, niece Dorae Schooley and great nephew Luke Chaves.
Carol was born in Hayward at Hayward Hospital. Graduated Sunset High School Class of 1965. Carol worked at Champion Company for 18 years, I. Magnum 10 ½ years and Service Merchandise.
Carol moved from Hayward to Oakland upon graduation and never looked back. She loved exploring Oakland and it’s many adventures. Carol moved into Beacon Hill apartment in 1987 and resided there for 30 plus years. She was the unofficial historian of the building and welcomed everyone she met with a smile. We want to thank her neighbors who were so helpful to Carol in recent years and whom she loved dearly.
Carol was an avid reader of romance and mystery being a particular favorite. A huge NASCAR fan and yes she was also a TREKKIE and if you don’t know what that is you didn’t know Carol. She was a cat person and loved her teddy bears, she will be remembered for her sarcastic humor and laugh. Carol had a sense of adventure in her younger years, having a husband that was a pilot made adventures more possible. Destination dinners were always on the horizon. Wonderful daughter, sister, aunt, wife and friend, in a word Carol.
Private Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday May 8, 2021, from 12 PM to 2 PM, at Sister’s home.

Thinking of Carol
When thinking about Carol, of course, I'll always remember the diligence by which she managed everyone's package deliveries out of a refreshing sense of community. She was as engaging and pleasant to the UPS, FedEx, and Postal drivers as she was to everyone in 561 Boden Way.
Her warm smile and sly sense of humor made me appreciate knowing her as a neighbor. I enjoyed giving her occasional rides to the county office, Safeway, and the bank, and each time, she made our trips fun by loudly complaining about the idiot drivers who âmust've gotten their driver's license from Sears and Roebuck.â I'm sure I'm not going out on a limb when I say that Carol will be fondly remembered by many, if not all, of the residents of 561 Boden Way.

Carmen, friend
Hello Family and friends of Carol:
Yesterday, while spring cleaning, I came across a Valentine's card from Carol, I smiled and tucked it away for a keepsake. This evening as I thought of Carol, I grabbed her card to share a memory.
Carol loved receiving and displaying her favorite flowers, and Morris made sure she got her favorite - purple Star Gazers! I smiled as I read my Valentine's card because I could picture her saying, "Stop by when you got time, no rush, I wanna show you something." So, of course, I'd stop by to enjoy her beautiful flowers and watch the pods opened.
After Morris passed, we, the Beacon Hill Community, did our best to be supportive of Carol. So, for Valentine's Day, I brought her purple and white Star Gazers, in appreciation, she gave me a Valentine's card with a heart-shaped tree covered with colorful heart-shaped flowers. Inside were these words:
Carmen -
Sending you a note just to say your're in my heart and thoughts on Valentine's Day and every day.
Thanks so much for the flowers, it was very thoughtful of you.
Hope you have a great day.
Carol
Speaking of Morris, I told Carol, "He would have given them to you."
I miss them both!!! We loved, and miss them both!!! I thank God for precious memories!!!

I worked with Carol for 9 years at I. Magnin. We called each other 'bitch' all the time but we meant it with love. I called her to wish her a happy birthday but her phone was not in service which was unusual for Carol not to answer. The last time I think I talked to her was in April. She sounded great and we laughed and talked about our I. Magnin days. I don't know what she passed from but I'm still in shock. She was a wonderful friend to me and my husband. RIP (bitch) my friend. I'm sure I'll be seeing you in the here after. Just don't say our special word in front of the Lord. I wouldn't want him to kick us out of heaven.

Carmen Melson, Resident Manager
To the family and friends of Carol Ann (Izatt) Kernick:
Mrs. Carol Kernick was dearly loved. Carol was a happy, humble, loving, kind and strong woman. She was known for her acts of kindness, like faithfully greeting the mailperson and retrieving packages to keep them safe.
Her heart was broken when Morris, her husband of 48 years, passed away in 2019. Since she did not drive, the âBeacon Hill Communityâ lovingly rallied around her. Many neighbors ran errands and/or took her on errands/doctor appointments; delivered special meals; filled her grocery lists; stopped by to check in, or ask if she needed anything; or carried her trash downstairs when she hung her red beads with the two cherries on her door knob.
Carol was special to everyone. Her kindnesses and thoughfulness are remembered. Carol is dearly missed.
Kindest and tenderest regards

To the Family and Friends of Mrs. Carol Kernick:
Loriâs title and description of Carol, âthe unofficial historian of the buildingâ is quite fitting. Carol moved into Beacon Hill about a year after it was built, and it is likely that she met every resident that has ever lived in this building, and perhaps every mail carrier that ever delivered mail or packages. Carol looked forward to the mail and package deliveries. She listened and watched for those trucks from her balcony and always came downstairs to personally greet and chat with the carriers; these were her friends: Paul, Megan and Maria to name a few.
Carol and I lived on the same floor and spoke often. After Morris passed, I, like other âBeacon Hill Communityâ residents, made a point to check in on Carol. If I missed a day or two, she would call to say, âIâm just checking on you, I havenât heard from you in a couple of days - just want to make sure youâre okay.â That was so sweet and thoughtful of her. I never told her how special that made me feel, but I made sure I showed her how special she was to me.
Carol enjoyed having Ms. Frances and I stop by because we could always count on Ms. Frances saying something witty or funny. Carol would tilt her head ever-so-slightly, glance over at me, smile and wink. I now realize how much she looked forward to those check-ins visits.
I am grateful for the precious moments we shared, and thankful for the memories.
My condolences to the Family, you are in my prayers.
Carmen

I would like to share my story with Ms Carol. I have known Ms. Carol for over 20 years and she has always been so kind and caring.
I originally met her in 1998 when I first moved into this building long ago. She was actually my next door neighbor. She would always be so talkative and her personality so kind. Fast forward to now, Ms. Carol still would have that bubbly, kind, personality. I remember the day she went into the hospital, I had went to CVS to get her a card (a nine lives Cat card - because Ms. Carol if you didn't know, she loved her cats:) It was. a "Get Well Soon Card" We were expecting her home as usual, in a day or too. I in fact, I had picked her up some barley soup from the Safeway, just the day prior as well.- Ms Carol was always clipping safeway coupons and showing me the deals on the large pack of Bacon or Diet Pepsi! -
Thank you Ms. Carol for always sharing! Giving my daughter stickers and holding our packages without fuss. I am glad you are now in a better place. I guess God knew Mr. Kernick needed you more in Heaven! May both of you rest in peace and happiness for evermore.
Sincerely,
Marcus Jefferson

Mrs. Kernick Was always so thoughtful and pleasant. I remember she always looked out for me and kept an eye out on what was happening in our neighborhood. She was always smiling from ear to ear when I saw her. I really enjoyed our conversations in passing. Though they were brief they were always extremely pleasant.

Carol was Funny, Kind & Generous..
I enjoyed shopping for Carol and laughing with her. She was so kind looking out for the people in the building. Carol knew where everyone lived how long they lived in the building, who was moving out and who was moving in. Shopping for her was always an adventure. Carol had a whole strategy on how to get her $5 Friday Pepsi at Safeway. She knew where to guide you to find everything she loved, and if they didnât have it there was no other substitute. She was so grateful for my help and would give me little gifts that I had to ask her to promises to stop. Helping Carol was a way to give back the kindness of those that gave to my mother. Iâm broken hearted to loose her. She was one of a kind and I will miss her dearly. I will give to others on her behalf.
Rest in Peace my friend

These are the words I can use to describe her. I remember all the days when I reached their building. She was always there to open the door for me. Ready with her tub/bucket where she put all the packages that belonged to her neighbors - no matter what the weight of the package was, she would bring them up to their door steps.
Carol, if you can hear me now, I would like to thank you for making my job a lot easier. I miss you so much and I pray your soul is in Heaven.

Remembering Carol today on her Birthday, May 6th. Sending love to Lori, Bill, and family and friends.
Today we celebrate the day God gave the gift of life to Carol, and for allowing our paths to cross, our lives to connect, and our hearts to love.
Remembering Carol with a smile and a memory - her specific tuna request:
BUMBLE BEE PRIME ALBACORE TUNA in the GOLD can 🙂
It seemed to sell out faster that the other tunas on the shelf, so it was hard to find. I went to a few stores before I finally found that specific tuna, so whenever I did come across it, I'd surprise her. She was so appreciative. I loved to see her smile and make her heart happy because I knew if Mr. Kernick were around,
"Morris would bring it home..." ..."with flowers."
May today, be a day of sweet memories, smiles and laughter.

Carol was kind, funny, and lived to talk. I will remember all the times we spent laughing together about a show, or a person. She was always giving me crossword puzzle books or tin cans to take to school and give to the kids or art teacher. Carol had a big heart.

She was a very sweet person that always had coupons for me when i came to work, most. Of the time she old let me in the garage so i could park my car and we would always laugh about getting a key.
Lunch was always a topic of our conversation because it was always the chicken sandwich 2 for 1 at Burger King. She will be truly be missed.
