Obituary For Delinda Freitas Braga

Every life tells a story. Some are stories of adventure, others of sacrifice, determination, and love. Delinda Freitas Braga’s life was a beautiful blend of all of them.

Born on December 3, 1935, in the small village of Santo Espirito on the island of Santa Maria in the Azores, Portugal, Delinda entered a world far different from the one she would eventually come to know. She was the youngest of ten children, with six boys and four girls. She was born a twin, although her twin sadly passed away from dysentery at a very young age.

Life on Santa Maria was simple, but it was seldom easy. Families worked hard, resources were limited, and much of daily life revolved around the home, the land, and the community. As a young girl, Delinda would walk to a natural spring to collect water for her family, a small but telling example of the responsibilities that were part of everyday life.

She grew up surrounded by a close-knit Portuguese family, developing an especially strong bond with her mother, Maria. Even decades later, after building a life thousands of miles away, Delinda spoke lovingly of her parents and siblings. Her memories of Santa Maria remained vivid, and she carried the traditions and values of her childhood with her throughout her life.

Those early years helped shape the woman she would become: strong-willed, resourceful, hardworking, deeply religious, and determined to make the most of whatever life placed before her.

A Love Story Across the Atlantic

As a young woman, Delinda began exchanging letters with Melvin Braga, a young Portuguese-American man living with his parents in Fremont, California. Melvin worked in a foundry and helped manage his parents’ 10-acre apricot orchard, a reflection of the same hardworking values that Delinda knew so well.

Their courtship began with handwritten letters traveling across the Atlantic Ocean, connecting two young people who had grown up in different worlds but shared many of the same traditions, beliefs, and dreams.

In the 1950s, Melvin traveled to the Azores to meet Delinda. What began as a correspondence became a lifelong partnership. They married, and Delinda left the island of her childhood to begin a new chapter in Fremont, California.

For a young woman who had spent her early life in a small village on Santa Maria, leaving her family and homeland required extraordinary courage. Yet Delinda embraced her new life with the same determination and resilience that had defined her upbringing.

Together, Delinda and Melvin built a home, raised their three children—Diane, Larry, and David—and established a life rooted in hard work, faith, family, and friendship.

Melvin, born in 1930, passed away in 2012. Their marriage and the life they created together remained one of the defining chapters of Delinda’s story.

A Home Built on Hard Work and Love

Delinda believed that a good life was something you built, one day at a time.

She was a devoted homemaker, but that description alone hardly captures the energy and determination she brought to everything she did. She was a woman who rarely sat still, always finding something that needed tending, preparing, improving, or creating.

There was always a meal to prepare, something to bake, a garden to care for, a family member to help, or a project waiting around the house.

She took tremendous pride in her home and family. The property had once been part of the Braga family’s apricot orchard, and Delinda made wonderful use of the fruit trees that remained. Apricots were harvested, baked into homemade treats, preserved, and shared. Very little went to waste.

She loved gardening, flowers, fruit trees, and the satisfaction of creating a beautiful and welcoming home. One of her favorite magazines was Better Homes and Gardens, which seemed particularly fitting for someone who found so much joy in making things grow and flourish. Delinda and Melvin were big travelers and in their retired life they had taken many cruises, traveled through Europe, yes and many trips to Santa Maria Azores. They had great times and great experiences.

Delinda understood the value of hard work, and she practiced it every day. She was focused, practical, resourceful, and remarkably productive. When she set her mind to something, she generally found a way to accomplish it.

Her success was reflected in the life she built: a loving family, a well-kept home, enduring friendships, and the respect of those who knew her.

The Right Stuff

To her children, Delinda was affectionately remembered as the “tough mom on the block.”

She had high expectations, a strong personality, and a firm belief that children should learn responsibility and respect. Yet behind that toughness was a generous heart and a home where the neighborhood children were always welcome.

The Braga family’s large yard became a gathering place where children played, friendships developed, and countless childhood memories were made.

Over the years, Delinda formed close relationships not only with her children’s friends but also with their parents and families. The Jacobs, Germoes, Sharps, Correias, and many others became part of a wider circle of friendship surrounding the Braga household.

Those relationships often lasted well beyond the childhood years, becoming lifelong connections built around shared experiences, holidays, celebrations, and the simple pleasure of being together.

Delinda had a way of making people feel that they belonged.

Christmas was especially memorable in the Braga home. Delinda delighted in bringing family and friends together, preparing wonderful meals, baking, decorating, and creating the traditions that her children and grandchildren would remember for years to come.

For Delinda, family was never simply a matter of who lived under the same roof. It was a much larger circle of people who cared for one another and shared their lives.

Never Forgetting Santa Maria

Although Delinda made California her home, a part of her heart always remained on the island of Santa Maria.

She never forgot her parents, her siblings, or the village where her life began.

During the 1960s, Delinda helped several of her brothers and sisters immigrate to the United States, giving them opportunities to build new lives of their own. She continued helping relatives in the Azores whenever possible and took great pride in maintaining those family connections.

Her Portuguese heritage was not merely something she remembered; it was something she lived.

She remained connected to the Portuguese community, including the Portuguese I.D.E.S. Hall in Newark, California, and treasured the traditions, celebrations, food, and friendships that connected her to her homeland.

Delinda and Melvin were also devoted Catholics and longtime members of Holy Spirit Church in Fremont. Their faith provided a foundation for their marriage, guided their family life, and remained a source of comfort and strength throughout the years.

They enjoyed traveling together, spending time with friends, and sharing the life they had worked so hard to create.

The Legacy of a Generation

Every family has a history, but not every family has someone who can bring that history to life. For Marie and Antoinette, Delinda Braga became that extraordinary connection between the past and the present a living bridge to the generations of Portuguese families who called the island of Santa Maria in the Azores their home.

Delinda carried within her a remarkable collection of memories, family relationships, traditions, and personal experiences that could never be fully captured in official records. Her recollections of island life, the families who lived there, the relationships that connected them, and the stories passed from one generation to the next became invaluable resources for Marie and Antoinette as they worked to document Portuguese family trees.

Through conversations with Delinda, Marie and Antoinette were able to explore the human stories behind names, dates, and genealogical records. Delinda’s memories helped illuminate family connections that might otherwise have been forgotten, providing personal context to the lives of ancestors whose histories were shaped by the traditions, hardships, faith, and close-knit communities of Santa Maria.

With Delinda’s passing, a remarkable chapter in her family’s history has come to a close.

Delinda was the youngest of ten children, and with her passing, she is the last of her six brothers and three sisters to be laid to rest.

It is difficult to imagine that the children who once grew up together on a small island in the Atlantic, sharing the experiences and challenges of another time, have now all completed their journeys.

They belonged to a generation that understood hardship, sacrifice, perseverance, and the importance of family. Some remained close to the land of their birth, while others crossed oceans in search of new opportunities.

Their lives were not always easy, but they worked hard, raised families, helped one another, and created opportunities for the generations that followed.

Delinda was part of that story.

She carried the memories of her parents and siblings throughout her life, speaking of them with affection even in her later years. Through her, those stories became part of her children's and grandchildren's understanding of where their family came from.

Although that generation has now passed, its influence remains.

The values they lived by, the sacrifices they made, and the traditions they preserved continue through their children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and the generations still to come.

Their chapter may have closed, but the family story continues.

A Life Well Lived

Delinda was especially proud of her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Diane Braga (the late Steven Cameron), Larry Braga (Allisun Braga), and David Braga; her granddaughters, Lauren Braga and Danielle Braga; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and longtime friends.

Those who knew Delinda will remember a woman of remarkable energy, determination, and character.

They will remember her cooking and baking, her gardens and flowers, the apricots from the old orchard, the warmth of her Christmas gatherings, her devotion to her Catholic faith, and her enduring love for her Portuguese heritage.

They will remember her strong opinions, her independence, her generosity, and her ability to accomplish more in a day than many people might imagine.

Above all, they will remember the home she and Melvin created and the countless lives touched by their kindness, hospitality, and friendship.

Delinda’s journey began in a small village on an island in the Atlantic Ocean. It carried her across the sea to California, where she built a family, a home, and a life filled with purpose.

She lived through extraordinary changes in the world, but the values that guided her remained remarkably constant: faith, family, hard work, perseverance, and love.

In the end, perhaps the greatest measure of a successful life is not simply what we accomplish for ourselves, but what we leave behind for others.

By that measure, Delinda lived a rich and successful life.

Her legacy lives on in the family she raised, the friendships she nurtured, the traditions she preserved, and the generations whose lives will continue to be shaped by her example.

Flowers are warmly welcomed in her memory, a fitting tribute to a woman who found such joy in gardens, flowers, and the beauty of the natural world.

May Delinda Freitas Braga rest in eternal peace.

One generation has now passed, but its love, traditions, and memories remain in all those who follow.

There is a future ahead.

Family and friends are warmly invited to attend any or all of the services as we gather to honor and celebrate her life.

Delinda will be deeply missed by so many. I can still picture her peeking through the drapes whenever I would drop Diane off a little too late after a night out. She always waited up! Delinda treated me like family, and I will never forget the love and care that she and Melvin gave my son, Jake. They taught him patty-cake in Portuguese, kept a supply of those ever-so-necessary pacifiers on hand, cooked pancakes whenever he wanted (just about every day), and let him watch cartoons instead of their usual programs. In so many ways, Delinda spoiled and loved Jake --- "her boy." She spoiled me as well with her homemade Portuguese sweet bread, soups, and apricot jam. I will be forever grateful for Delinda's love, warmth and generosity, and I will always cherish these memories. Love and hugs, Patty

I'm so sorry for your heartbreak. Delinda will be greatly missed! Those chickie parties, milestone birthday parties - and those Jell-O shots! She introduced me!! She adored her family - cherished them and worked hard to provide and to protect them. I loved the stories she would share when we were together. They were always about her family. She treated me like a daughter and I loved her like my own mother. She leaves a legacy that should be cherished and remembered! Hugs Denise and Roger Dahart
