Diana was born in Seattle, Washington to a widowed mother. She never knew her biological father, as he was killed during WWII. When she was 5 years old, she and her mother moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota. There, her mother met George Hoerner, a WWII vet, and they married. Diana always said that George was a great father and took her in as one of his own.

When Diana was in high school, she wanted to go to college but couldn’t afford to go. The military, at that time, however, was recruiting high school students and would pay for your college if you served on active duty for at least 2 years. Around 1962, Diana enlisted in the. U.S. Army to help pay for her college education. She was placed on inactive duty until she graduated Mount Marty College in 1966. After college, she went on active duty for the U.S. Army.

She did her basic training at Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio, Texas. After basic training, she went to Fort Jackson, South Carolina for about 1 year. Then she went to Camp Zama, Japan for approximately 18 months. In Japan, Diana served as a Registered Nurse to the wounded soldiers that came from Vietnam during the Tet Offensive. Diana was honorably discharge in April 1969 from Camp Zama, a Captain in the U.S. Army.

Diana came back to the U.S. and decided to settle in Hayward, California. She started working at Kaiser Permanente, Hayward on the Med/Surg unit eventually becoming the charge nurse. She worked at Kaiser for 40 years until her retirement around 2010.

Every year during the holidays and vacation time, she would go back to South Dakota where she loved to bake holiday cookies, play board games, and camped with her family. She loved her brothers and sisters as if they were her own children and would take them shopping and buy them gifts. She always wanted to make sure her family was taken care of.

Diana was always a positive person and always looked on the bright side of things, even when she fell ill. She always made light of things. She loved going to the movies, the casino, having lunch with friends, and traveling. She loved to crochet, arrange flowers, gardening, and crafts. She loved her bingo, and going to the art classes at the Carlton Plaza where she lived the last year of her life. She loved it there and lived her life the way she wanted to at the “Ritz.”

She was an amazing, kind, generous, and positive person. She will be forever missed. Diana constantly donated money to over 20 different charities over the years. Her favorite was the Wounded Warrior Project. I know she would love any donation to that charity in her name. Thank you.
