Donald "Don" Gene Kirby, age 82, a long-time resident of the Niles District of Fremont, California, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2026.

Don was born on February 4, 1944, in Richmond, California, and was raised in the East Bay. He graduated from Arroyo High School in San Lorenzo before proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army. Don spent three cold, cold years (his words) stationed in Bindlach, Germany, and was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant.

Upon returning home to the Bay Area, Don met the love of his life, Patricia "Pat" Connelly. The two were wed on February 24, 1968, and not too long after, bought their forever home in the historic Niles District (aka “Pleasantville” to Don). It was in this home and community that they built their beautiful life together. A year after moving in, they welcomed their first daughter, Amy, followed soon after by Molly and Sarah. Pat was the absolute center of Don's world, and his three daughters were his ultimate pride and joy.

Don enjoyed watching baseball and football, reading, and game nights. Yahtzee was a favorite and he could play a mean hand of poker. He loved to discuss historical and current events in equal measure, always curious about the world and in awe of nature. He often said “you don’t know what you don’t know.” He was an avid watcher of movies, especially Turner Classic Movies. And, if he knew your favorite actor, he would record their movies to save and watch with you.

Don will be remembered for his big heart and hospitality. The door to the Kirby home was open to friends and family, always, and was a safe harbor to many. It was a place called "home" time and time again for meals, holidays, and sound advice (from Father Don). Anyone who simply needed a place to be, and many times to live, were welcomed with open arms.

Don met life with a combination of grit, grace, humor and caring that was all his own. A couple of his favorite mantras to help get through challenging times were, "This too shall pass," and "The beat goes on." He will be deeply missed by his family; including, grandchildren (Kate, Samantha, Payton, and Brody), cousins, nieces, nephews, extended relatives and many friends. All who take great comfort in knowing he is reunited with the love of his life, Pat Kirby, who passed in 2019.
