Obituary For Donna Jo Lopez

Donna Lopez, of Newark, passed away peacefully at her home on February 2, 2023. She was surrounded by many loved ones. She is survived by her five children, Wendell, Bill (Tina), Olivia (Ruben), Gloria (Kirk), Anthony Sr. (Angela); grandchildren: Adrian, Jesse (Myra), Anthony Jr., Jeanette, great granddaughters: Autumn and Avery. Donna is also survived by brothers: Ronnie, Wade (Kim), Darryl (Debbie), Jimmy (Lori), and sister Dean (Jim). As well as numerous loving nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Brother-in-law Taurino and Concha Lopez, and their family, remained such a special part of Donna’s life and were with her until the end. She was preceded in death by Bartolome Lopez, her husband of 52 years, her parents, John and June Looney, brother: Johnny, sisters: Freda Nixon and Christine Terry.

Donna grew up in Oklahoma, the oldest of nine children, in an era where everyone helped to pick cotton as part of the family income. She often shared stories about the hard work, and strong family bond created in these tough times. She moved to California in 1962, after she and Bart were married. Donna was a stay-at-home mother while her kids were young. She proved not only to be “mom” to her children but also a second mother to so many other neighborhood children. This was supported by the number of neighbor “kids”, who visited her throughout the decades and especially when her health began to decline. She often baked cakes and cookies for all the kids, and this was topic of conversation on many of these occasions. Donna visited Oklahoma in 2020 for a Looney Family Reunion part 2. Donna was unable to attend the original reunion, so her siblings held a second one when she could make it. She enjoyed being treated like a queen by her siblings, in-laws, and so many nieces and nephews. Her brother-in-law Richard Nixon played the guitar and sang George Jones classics as they all visited on the porch. Donna was an avid lover of country music and especially enjoyed listening, laughing, and talking about her favorite songs. She was a beautiful soul, who left many loving memories.

Her Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, February 17, 12pm at Fremont Chapel of the Roses, 1940 Peralta Blvd, Fremont CA 94536. Burial will follow at Irvington Memorial Cemetery in Fremont CA.
