Obituary For Earnest Oliver Webster

Our loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend departed from this world on June 27th in Oakland, California.

Earnest was born in Houston, Texas to Ola Burks and Eddie Webster. He was raised in the 1st Ward with his two older siblings, Herbert (HB) and Christine Olivia and his younger sister, Betty Jean. During his youth, Earnest attended Mallalieu Methodist Church and he was an alto singer in the youth choir. Throughout his childhood, he loved sports, especially basketball and football so much so that during his time at Booker T. Washington High School, he earned a four year scholarship to the University of California, Los Angeles.

After high school, Earnest left Texas and settled permanently in San Francisco to escape the prejudice of the South. In 1961, Earnest married Elizabeth Morris and raised two children, Angela and David. Earnest was a man of many hats. He served the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency as a bus driver for 40 years driving over 3 million miles without an accident. He was known for his famous quote, “Be consistent and you’ll be alright.” He served as a basketball and weightlifting instructor at the YMCA for nearly 20 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed cars and riding motorcycles. Earnest also dabbled in real estate. To his family, he was a source of unconditional love. That love came in the form of kind words, his thoughtfulness, encouragement and often in the way of financial support.

Over the years, he maintained close relationships with his family in Houston and he frequently made trips back home to visit. He especially loved and cherished his mother, Ola, ensuring that she was always well cared for and supported from miles away. He will always be remembered as strong, generous, independent and highly respected.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, HB Gibbs, Sr and sister, Christine Goodie; nephews-Herbert Gibbs, Jr, Danny Gibbs and Donald Goodie; niece-Grace Goodie.

He leaves to cherish special memories- daughter, Angela Webster; son, David Webster and daughter-in-law, Tatia Brown-Webster; sister, Betty Wilson; former wife, Elizabeth Morris; granddaughters, Angelina Hatch and Marina Hatch; grandsons, Derrion Webster and Tyvaughn Ross; great-grandchildren, Elijah-Earnest Segura, Zatyiah Murphy, Abe Brannon Pickett, Kaiden Webster; nieces, Cynthia Jones, Rosalind McKinney, Beverly Jones, Christine Lewis; nephews, Milton Goodie III, Howard Goodie, Paul Goodie, Richard Goodie, Michael Wilson, Jeffery Wilson, Brian Wilson and a host of extended family members.

My name is Irwin Lum, and I had the most memorable opportunity to work with Mr. Webster at the San Francisco Municipal Railway when I transferred to Kirkland Division in 1981. As I worked along “Web” as most of us who called him, he was a true leader and role model for many operators who would look to him for his opinions, guidance and he would always steer you in the right direction. “Web” would always shy away and never want to be recognized publicly for his over 40 years of safe driving and public service to the County of San Francisco. He would always be the one who would stay after he pulled his bus in at nite to make sure all the drivers would move their cars out of the lot before they got a ticket or was towed, this is the kind of person he was, caring, selflessness for all those he knew. He was a true leader, a person we will always remember and cherish that we had the ability to know and work with a man that he was. We would also like to thank his family for sharing him with us at Muni for all his years that we spent with him.
