Obituary For Edward K. Rodrigues

Edward “Ed” Kenneth Rodrigues passed peacefully in his sleep in his hometown of Fremont on Saturday, November 9, 2019, after battling complications from COPD. He was 87 years old and a resident of Fremont for 57 years.

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii on July 13, 1932, of Portuguese descent, Ed was the son of Hazel (Andrade) and Manuel Rodrigues and spent his childhood in Hawaii with his parents and his two brothers, Joseph and Raymond. He graduated from Baldwin High School in Maui and then enlisted in the Army at 16. There, he spent two years serving in the Korean War being stationed in Germany, and later spent time travelling throughout Europe, taking up photography during his travels. When Ed completed his service, he made his new home in California, where his family had relocated from Hawaii, and he continued to work for the Army as a Reservist until 1961 and as a mechanic. He then became a maintenance specialist by trade for Electro Coatings in Emeryville, where he spent nearly 33 years.

Ed married and he and his wife settled in Fremont and became a part of Holy Spirit parish, where he raised his family and where his children went to school. There, he made lifelong friends and was active in his parish and community. He enjoyed coaching his sons for CYO in basketball and baseball, and he also enjoyed taking his family on many camping trips and fishing, as well as visits to the islands to reconnect with his roots. He was an avid sports fan and prided himself as a dedicated Raiders and A’s fan. He had many talents and enjoyed using them to work on his house and yard, and especially to help his friends and family. He was happiest spending time with his family and friends and enjoying Hawaiian style cookouts and his home, of which he was very proud.

The loves of his life left him early, his first wife Mildred Lillian Rodrigues in 1988 and Judith Clara Rodrigues in 2014. Ed’s memory lives on through his family and friends, his children daughter and son-in-law Maria and Benjamin Lang of San Rafael, son Kenneth Rodrigues of Oregon, and son and daughter-in-law Daniel and Patricia Rodrigues of Brentwood; grandchildren Ava and Isabel Lang, Lisa and Stephanie Rodrigues, Lauren and Austin Reed and great-grandson Wyatt Reed; his stepchildren Carlene, Rodney, and Roland Timario (predeceased by Sandra, Timmy and Randy), and grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the Timario family; his beloved caretaker Akuna “Lillian” Okoro, extended family, friends, and his constant buddy, his cat Mylie.

You are invited to services to celebrate Ed’s life on Wednesday, November 13, 2019, from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. for the viewing, and at 6:30 p.m. for the vigil at Chapel of the Roses, 1940 Peralta Blvd., Fremont (510) 797-1900. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2019, at 12:00 noon at Holy Spirit Church, 37588 Fremont Blvd., Fremont, with burial immediately following at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 26320 Mission Blvd., Hayward. He was full of wisdom. He was full of strength He was kind. He was considerate. He has a good heart, he said to me few days after his heart surgery in August 2019, "I have a good heart, that was why God saved my heart twice in a couple of days". He showed me the deeper meaning faith. He asked me in his house, after that surgery "do you think I would have made it alive out of the surgery" I said I don't really know. Then he said, I had a funny feeling I will come out of it. He fought, he was really strong. Seconds before his 2nd heart attack in the same week one of the doctors called him a strong fella. He was not just someone I was taking care of, he was my friend. He has asked me if I will miss him when he dies, I didn't give him an answer then, now I will say, Papa Ed, it's hard for someone to know you and not miss you when you are gone. Rest in peace.

Papa Ed was a Wonderful Man, He took Great care of My Mom till her very last second of life. He always Welcome all us Family members and was always a Great person to be around and to share and hear his stories. For sure we all will meet again. His favorite line to me on the phone was "Aloha to you to" "I don't know you tell me I'm all ears" What Great Memories.
