Obituary For Gregoria "Georgia" Dumanon Abellar Megue

Georgia, 90 years old, of Union City, CA, peacefully passed away in her home on March 3, after losing her battle with cancer.

Georgia was born on October 1, 1922 in Butuan City, Agusan Philippines to Froiland and Rita Dumanon. She attended Agusan High School, then continued on to Philippine Normal. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from National University, Manila and completed her education with a Master of Arts in Guidance and Counseling from Manuel L. Quezon University, Manila.

Georgia was a retired State of California employee with the Employment Development Department. More so, she crafted a career of public service, serving as Commissioner or Board Member of no fewer than 17 California Local and State government and local organizations commissions, serving in various leadership positions in 16 different non-profit organizations and engaging in multiple volunteer activities. Georgia amassed experience in equal rights in employment , fair housing, crime prevention toward the elderly, youth counseling, immigration and citizenship, and public accommodation. She was the only Filipino ever appointed to the Fair Employment and Housing commission of the State of California.

Georgia is survived by her spouse, Miguel De La Cruz, children; Romeo Abellar, Augusto Abellar (Grace) and Virginia Sanchez (Joel), grandchildren; Ronald Abellar, Jovi Swanson, Maria Abellar, Aimee Abellar Feraren, Janis Sanchez, Yvette Larragoite, Jayson Sanchez and Caroline Abellar, great grandchildren; Zachary, Maceo, Christopher, Ryland, Joshua, Daniel, Isaiah, Xavier and Jasmine, siblings; Josefina Janus, Teresita Villarin and Ulysses Dumanon, and also a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 3pm-9pm with a Vigil Service at 7pm at St. Anne Catholic Church, 32223 Cabello St., Union City, 94587. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, March 7, 10am at St. Anne Catholic Church, with Fr. Geoffrey Baraan officiating. Burial will follow at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo.
