Obituary For Harriett Hope Buehler

At the age of 100, Harriett passed away peacefully on Friday, December 14, 2012. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. J. Merle Buehler. Harriett was the loving mother of three sons, J. Phillip (Jen) of Fremont, Rodger of Oakland and Keith of Seiad Valley. She was a loving grandmother and great-grandmother, known for her warm and cheery disposition.

Harriett began her life in Turlock, CA in 1912. She and her parents moved to Watsonville, where she met her love, Merle in high school. They wed in 1940. Merle became a doctor and served in Europe during WWII, while Harriett and son, Phil, stayed with her parents in Watsonville.

After the war, they moved to Centerville, CA (Fremont) where Merle set up a medical practice and became the first Chief of Staff at Washington Hospital. In 1955, even before the hospital was established, Harriett was one of the original Pink Ladies of the Washington Hospital Service League.

Harriett was the center of the family, taking care of The Doc and focusing on raising their three boys. She was an only child, and took care of her parents, in their later lives. She was a remarkable woman as a daughter, wife, mother and grandmother for 100 years.

She had many very good friends, most of whom preceded her in death. She enjoyed trips with her family, The Washington Hospital Service League, playing bridge and golf, membership at Castlewood Country Club, and entertaining at her home. Her greatest joy was spending time with her granddaughters and great-grandkids. She will be greatly missed.

As per Harriett?s wishes, a private graveside service will be held in Watsonville for the immediate family. If you wish to make a donation in her memory, the family requests that it be made to the Washington Hospital Service League, c/o Washington Hospital, 2000 Mowry Ave., Fremont, CA 94538.

My gram was a wonderful person. If I can someday be half the woman and friend that gram was I will consider my life a success. I miss her every day. The world has lost an amazing woman when she passed. I find comfort in knowing that her and gramp are together again. Her place was always at his side.
