Obituaries

Born February 18, 1918 in Azores, and entered into rest on March 9, 2012 in Fremont at the age of 94. Devoted mother of Maria Arlete Costa and her husband Ernesto of Newark, and Lina Freitas of Fremont. Beloved grandmother of Ernest and his wife Anna, Belina, Kelly and her husband David, and Robert and his wife Jennifer. Cherished great-grandmother of Ryan, Katelyn, Matthew, and Christiana. Predeceased by her husband, Francisco Caetano Borges, on January 18, 2000. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Hilaria and her husband, Francisco, came to this country at the age of 50. Even though they did not know how to speak English, they made a good life for themselves in Newark. By the age of 62, they were both retired and had paid off their home. Hilaria was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all. She loved to cook, sing, and spend time with her family. Every Sunday, the whole family would come together at her home for an evening of eating dinner, playing cards, and reminiscing about the past. Hilaria will be deeply missed and her memory will live in our hearts forever.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 14, 4-8pm with a vigil at 7pm at Fremont Memorial Chapel, 3723 Peralta Blvd., Fremont, CA 94536. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, March 15, 10:30am at St. Edward's Catholic Church, 5788 Thornton Ave., Newark, CA 94560. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward.
