Obituary For James Durwood Ingram

Legendary Washington High School football coach, James Durwood Ingram, also known as Coach I, passed away on March 5th 2013 at the age of 80 from heart failure. Born in Gerty, Oklahoma on January 8th 1933, Jim was the oldest of three children of Juanita Cecil Ingram and Golman Ciney Ingram. The Ingram family moved to Holtville, California when Jim was a young man, and he graduated from Holtville High School in 1950. While attending Humbolt State University he met and married, Patricia Mattax Ingram. Jim graduated from Humbolt with his Bachelor of Ar4ts in 1955, and began his career as a teacher and football coach. After working at Rio Vista High School from 1955-58, Jim returned to Humbolt State to work as an assistant football coach from 1958-1960. In 1960 the Ingram family settled in Fremont, California where Jim worked as a teacher and coach at Washington High School. In the mid 1970s Jim worked at Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward, and returned to Washington High School in 1978, and continued to coach and teach until his retirement in 2002. Coach I was a dedicated teacher and committed coach who considered his students and players his 'other' kids.

Jim is survived by his wife Patricia Ingram, sister Sandra VanDiver, children: Michael Ingram, Dana Batt, and Philip Ingram, his grandchildren: Aaron Ingram, Amy Ingram, Luke Batt, Leah Thibault, Taylor Ingram and his beloved bulldog Beau. He is preceded in death by his mother, father and his brother, Bob Ingram.

I just heard tonight about the passing of Mr. Ingram. I was a student at Washington High from 1966-1969. Back then girls only had female PE teacher, so I don't remember ever having him as a teacher, but I do remember him, and how student referred to him as Coach I. I am sorry for the family's loss. I will keep him in my prayers.
