Obituary For James Joseph Martin
James Joseph Martin of Fremont, California, entered into eternal rest on June 22, 2026, at the age of 94.
Born on May 29, 1932, in Tacoma, Washington, he was raised alongside his brother, John, and Paul, in a close-knit family that instilled in him the values of faith, service, and hard work. He proudly served in the United States Air Force before beginning a lifelong career in education.
He possessed a rare combination of wisdom, intelligence, and quiet strength. Throughout his life, he believed that leadership was best demonstrated through kindness, patience, and service. Whether leading a school district as superintendent or guiding his family through life's joys and challenges, he inspired confidence not by demanding attention but by earning respect through his character.
He dedicated his professional life to education, eventually becoming a superintendent in Lafayette. He believed deeply in the power of education to change lives and was respected by students, educators, and colleagues alike for his integrity, wisdom, and compassionate leadership.
On July 23, 1955, James married the love of his life, Arlene Martin. Together, they built a remarkable marriage spanning more than seventy years, centered on devotion, laughter, and unwavering partnership.
Above all else, James was devoted to his family. He was a loving husband, devoted father of eight, proud grandfather, caring great-grandfather, faithful man of God, trusted mentor, and loyal friend. He found joy in flying, taking his family on memorable summer vacations, and later spending many enjoyable days on the golf course.
Though known for his wisdom, he also possessed a delightful, understated sense of humor. His wit was never loud or attention-seeking. Instead, it appeared at just the right moment—a clever remark, a knowing smile, or a perfectly timed observation that could brighten the room and gently remind everyone not to take life too seriously.
James is survived by his beloved wife, Arlene; his Brother, Paul, and sister-in-law, Karen; his children Jim (Mary), (Joni), (Wendy), Greg (Alicia), Colleen (Louis), Patrick (Tracy), Paul (Lilia), and Anne (Paul); 17 cherished grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved sons, Michael Martin, 2021, and Joseph Martin, 2022, as well as his brother, John Martin.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate James’ life. A rosary will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. at the Chapel of the Roses. A funeral mass will follow on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fremont.
