Obituaries

Josephine A. Hernandez (Jo, Josie), a lifelong resident of Union City (Decoto), died on December 25, 2022 in her home surrounded by her family. She was 95 years old.

She was born in Los Angeles on March 17, 1927, moving to Decoto shortly after. Josephine spent most of her life caring for others. She worked as a nursing assistant in convalescent hospitals. She later spent many years taking care of her husband who was confined to a wheelchair. She also took care of her grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephew and nieces.

Josephine enjoyed gardening, cooking for her family and dancing. Most of all she loved spending time with her family. Later in life she learned she liked to travel. Especially going on cruises with her sibling.

Josephine is survived by her sons, Mario A. Hernandez (Toni) of San Jose and Gabriel A. Hernandez (Ken) of Kansas City, Kansas, two daughters, Louise Martinez (Jess) of Union City and Maria Elena Rios (Ramiro) of Houston, Texas. She’s also survived by her brothers Ruben Aguilar of Union City, Richard Aguilar of Fremont, Daniel Aguilar of Newark, two sisters, Mary Lou Limon of Newark and Yolanda Sierra of Hayward. Her legacy lives on in her 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

She is proceeded in death by her husband Felix A. Hernandez, daughter, Esther Rodriguez, granddaughter, Danielle (Dolly) Hernandez, parents Sabino and Rosa Aguilar, siblings, David Aguilar, Joe C. Aguilar, Arthur Aguilar, Virginia Solorio and Balvina (Mickey) Eldred.

Visitation is from 5-8 pm on Tuesday, January 3 with a Vigil Service at 6pm at Fremont Chapel of the Roses, 1940 Peralta Blvd, Fremont. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10am on Wednesday, January 4 at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, 703 C St, Union City. Burial to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward.
