Obituary For LCOL James Herman Stanhope

Jim Stanhope passed away on March 15, 2012 at the age of 88. Devoted husband of 66 years to Juanita Stanhope and loving father to Janine Stanhope of Fremont.

He was raised in Niles and Graduated WUHS ?41. He said his life really began in Niles Grammar School when he became aware of the love of his life Juanita Galvin. He flew combat as a WWII P-38 fighter pilot over Germany. In 1947, he was recalled into the new USAF. His Military career in aviation included special (atomic) weapons employment with various fighter planes during the cold war. After 1952, he served in Korea and at Langley Field, VA. He completed a tour of duty at an RAF base in England. Also, was assigned to Headquarters Air Force at the Pentagon and sent to diplomatic duty as Air Operations Advisor to the Peruvian Air Force in Lima, Peru. He was a Military Command Pilot with 15,200 pilot hours. He was a real hero and patriot and dearly loved by his family.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 29, 9-11AM followed by a chapel service at 11AM at Fremont Chapel of the Roses, 1940 Peralta Blvd., Fremont. A military service with honors will be held on Friday, March 30, 2pm at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery near Travis AFB, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon, CA 95620.

    My Dad was also a P-38 pilot and passed away several years ago. I was delighted to have had lunch with Jim a few times and hear stories of flying a P-38. He helped me relive experiences I had with my Dad. I am forever grateful for his time with me and his service to out Country.
