Obituary For Lionel Leo Roche

Nick passed away peacefully on April 23rd 2014 at the age of 91. He was born in Newark and lived there his whole life. He was very proud of his Newark heritage. Nick was a California native son and also a member of SES Council #8. He graduated from Washington H.S. in Fremont and worked for Leslie Salt (Cargill) in Newark for 32 years as a maintenance machinist.

Nick enjoyed flying his airplane, loved RV camping with friends, and traveled the world with his wife, Elly. He was an avid A’s baseball fan and enjoyed going to spring training games in Arizona. There was nothing he could not build. He created a one-of-a-kind dune buggy from Volkswagen parts and remodeled his home numerous times. His hobbies included painting, jewelry making and woodworking. He was known for creating and giving away holiday crafts to his family and friends. Nick enjoyed playing cards and above all he loved spending time with his family.

Nick is survived by his wife, Elly, of 65 years, his son Michael, daughter-in-law Charlene, grandsons Kelly and Kyle and their spouses Mandy and Samantha. He was a doting great-grandpa and known for treating his great-granddaughters Olivia, Layla, and Isabel to blueberries. One of his last projects was building a water tunnel for his great-granddaughters to run through during those hot summer days.

Nick was proud to be a first generation American. His parents emigrated from the Azores Islands and he is survived by his brothers Aniceto and Lewie. He is also preceded in death by his brother Newell and sister Marlene.
