Obituaries

Marcella immigrated from Spain as a young child with her sister Florence, brother Frank, and her parents Ignacio and Saturina Paniagua. Three other siblings were born here. Her sister Mary, and her brothers Tony and Alvin. The family settled in the Santa Clara Valley. They moved to Decoto (Union City) when she was still quite young and Marcella lived there until her death.

She was preceded in death by her husband Alfonso "Al" Roderigues, her son Alfonso "Fonsy" Roderigues, her parents, her sister Florence Sanchez, and her brothers Frank, Tony, and Alvin Paniagua. She is survived by her sister Mary Lawrence (Bruce) of Palo Cedro, granddaughter Michelle Roderigues, 4 great-grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces.

Marcella lived a wonderful life and was well known in Union City for her charitable and volunteer work in the community. Over the years, she gave a lot of her time to Our Lady of the Rosary Church and to the Lady Lioness', to name a few. For years, she and Al coordinated Union City's Thanksgiving food basket program for needy families. She was always there to give a helping hand.

The family would like to thank Marcella's care givers Rizalina Gomez, Letty Sutton, and Maria Owen for their outstanding service, dedication, and loving care that they gave Marcella in the last year of her life.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 4, from 5-8pm with a Vigil at 7pm at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, 703 C Street, Union City, CA 94587. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 5, 10am at the church. Burial will follow at Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park in Hayward, CA.
