Obituary For Maria Asuncion Padilla

Maria Asuncion Padilla 10/17/1951-4/14/2017 Resident of Union City

Maria is survived by her husband Leopoldo, and her four children: Veronica Paganelli, Myrna Gonzalez, Cesar and Leo Jr Padilla, and four beautiful grandchildren.

Maria’s journey began in the Mexican colonial city of Jalostotitlan, where at the early age of 12 she began working to help support her single mother and younger siblings. While living in Jalostotitlan she met her husband Leopoldo. As is customary in that region of Mexico, Leopoldo courted Maria by having late night window-side conversation. Maria soon after married Leopoldo and both immigrated to Union City to begin their family. Veronica was their firstborn, and a year and half later Leopoldo Jr. was born.

Maria was employed by American Licorice company in Union City where her tremendous work ethic was displayed in various responsibilities on the assembly line. Her dedication to her job was best exemplified by the fact that she never missed a day of work. Maria’s effort was quickly recognized and she was soon offered a supervisor position which she would carry out for the next 20 years. She would ultimately spend 28 years of her life dedicated to the incredibly difficult and demanding task of factory work that often times included 10 hour shifts 6 days a week.

Being a dedicated and loving parents, Maria and Leopoldo decided to grow their family by having two more children, Cesar and Myrna. Throughout her life Maria enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, shopping and feeding anyone who walked through her doors. Maria’s pride and joy were her children, whom she was able to put through college by making many sacrifices. Her children grew up to become an HR manager, teacher, anesthesiologist, and a family and marriage therapist. Maria’s love, passion and work ethic will continue to live through her children, grandchildren and future family. We are grateful for having a beautiful mother, sister and wife who will continue to guide and nurture those she loved in times to come.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 19th, from 5:8:30pm with a Vigil at 6:30pm at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 37891 2nd St., Fremont, CA 94536. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, April 20th, 11am at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward, CA.

Maria shared with me her health issues at yoga class. She inspired many with her dedication to being fit and her kindness. If you knew her, you will recall her charm and vivaciousness. She often spoke of her children and how proud she was of their accomplishments. We have missed Maria at yoga for a while now and am grateful that her son came to class and told us of her passing. She will be missed by the yoga group very much.

Maria had a zest for life. As a mother she was a fire breathing woman. As a friend she was funny, gracious and introduced me to some of the best tequila de México. My heart will hold her smile and affection when she named me Santinu. I will continue to love the beautiful familia she shared with me and call her in name. Santalynda
