Obituary For Mattie M. Fuller
Mattie Mae McGee was the eldest of ten children born to Robert McGee and Alice McGee (Cooper) on January 24, 1929 in Greenwood, Mississippi.
As a single mother to Josie McGee, Peggy McArthur and George McArthur Jr., she settled in Monroe, Louisiana and worked picking cotton and later as a domestic. While in Louisiana she married Albert Lee Fuller Sr. and moved to Oakland, California in 1964. To that union, four children were born: Albert Fuller Jr., Sharon Fuller, Debra Fuller and Paula Fuller. In the 1970’s, Mattie worked for the Oakland Unified School District as an Instructional Assistant, a position from which she retired.
Mattie had a deep, abiding faith in God and was a member of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Oakland, California for more than 40 years. In 1978, the family moved to Fremont, California, and after the passing of her beloved husband of 42 years in 2004, Mattie started attending the Hope Community Church in Fremont, CA. She instilled her deep abiding faith and trust in God to all of her children and grandchildren.
Mattie had a number of hobbies that she enjoyed including fashion, gardening, cake decorating, playing Monopoly, playing bingo at the Fremont Senior Center and walking around Lake Elizabeth in Fremont, CA. Mattie loved her garden where she cultivated many flowering plants, of which red roses were her favorite. Mattie will be remembered as a cherished daughter and sister, a loving wife and mother, a doting grandmother and great-grandmother, a friendly neighbor and a person who always had a ready smile and a kind word for everyone. Mattie was preceded in death by three of her children: Albert Fuller Jr., Sharon Fuller-Onadele and George McArthur Jr.
Mattie leaves to cherish her memory four daughters: Josie Manning, Peggy Green, Debra Ponder and Paula Fuller; three brothers: Otis McGee, George McGee and William McGee; two sisters, Willie McNeal and Gertie Johnson; grandchildren: LaShelle Manning, Frederick Manning Jr., Tuurischeva Green, Knecaya Green, Alice McArthur, Mattie McArthur, George McArthur III., Babatunde Onadele Jr., Abiola Onadele and Jalen Ponder; great-grandchildren: Patrick Manning, Khajaana Williams, Solomon Onadele and Corrine Onadele and a host of other great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and cousins throughout the United States.
