My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of this kind man. His humor and thoughtfulness contributed much to his success as a teacher, and he influenced and enriched the lives of countless young people. Vale, Mr. Bryant. With much love and gratitude, Loretta Binder

Dear Mike— Other than Carol, I have never shared more face-to-face, heart-to-heart talks than with you, almost from the time we met in 1976 in those truly joyful times as young teachers. In the eleven years since retirement, there was nothing I looked more forward to than our Tuesdays of breakfasts and bike rides. Now, there’s virtually no place in the Bay Area where you and I haven’t ridden. We never had a better ride than our last one two weeks ago at Golden Gate Park. I remember how your face glowed with love when we stopped close to Playland, and you described meeting Millie there not long before you married. Nobody I ever knew had more friends than yourself. From sailing across, (or skindiving in) the Pacific, to flying over California, to hiking in Alaska, to bungee-jumping in New Zealand, nobody I know lived as fully as you. I will miss our talks most, especially how much both of us endlessly celebrated your Millie and my Carol, our laughter, and mostly, the sheer joy of being together. You filled many lives with love and joy, and taught us they are the same things. And it’s no wonder that almost every time we parted, we said, “Well. That’s as good as it gets.” My love forever, Gary Bookout

Dear Millie, Chavela, and Laurie, As I mentioned earlier to Chavela and Lynn, I'm feeling especially sad today. You see I live in El Granada, just up the hill from Princeton Harbor, where Michael (and Tom) taught me how to sail almost 50 years ago. While I was walking my dog earlier today, I sat on a bench just looking at that lovely harbor, filled with so very many memories. I remembered telling Michael that I wanted to live out here someday. After a day of learning to sail, we all had dinner at Paul & Barbara’s Fishtrap — the Gulbransons and the Bryants — my Billy, me, and my ‘wasbund,' Paul. The restaurant is still there, but it's not Paul and Barbara’s any more — it’s just Barbara's. However, Princeton Harbor where we young teachers picnicked that day seems eternal, unchanged -- like the love I have in my heart for the Bryant family. All my love always, Barbara

My condolences to his family. I remember Millie was one of our girl scout leaders in Newark long before I had Mr. Bryant for Social Science in high school. He was very charismatic and passionate about his teaching and showed us all how to think for ourselves. He was an inspiration to us all. Hard to lose another member of our Newark family. It must have been 1979 or 80 when the Bryant family & the Mellberg family met and started a wonderful friendship and bonding. Our kids were joined together by music & theatre and the "big kids" by a joint love of life & sharing & caring & joy. I will never forget those hot tub parties, flowing wine, card games, dinners, more wine, and laughter. Always laughter. Mike never failed to have zingers & puns for every occasion. To this day it's one of my fondest memories of you, Mike. I feel blessed that I got to see you just a couple of weeks ago at Barb's. Millie, Chavela, and Laurie, my heart and love are with you now as it has been for all these years. With hugs & love, Judy

We all have those teachers that truly make an impact and 'touch' or lives forever. Mr Bryant was one of those for me, 12th grade Government @ Memorial HS, 1973-1974. I pray that you left this Earth filled with the joy that you brought to others.

Dear Millie, Chavela, and Laurie: My sincere condolences on the loss of your dear husband/father. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you now, and we pray that time and the beautiful memories you have as a family will be a source of comfort and love now and in the future. Love, Franz Bruckner and Family

Mike was an adventurer. Every memory I have involves a place, a trip, a destination, an adventure.. Yosemite, Tahoe, Santa Maria. Car, motorcycle, train. He was like I imagined Hemmingway to have been. He traveled in the real world, he traveled through books and he saw the future through the minds of his students. He was a good friend. I will miss him. Rick

Dear Millie, Chavela, and Laurie, When I received the news that our beloved Mr. Byant had flown home, I started crying and flashed back to when I first met Mr. B. He was an amazing teacher, mentor and friend. He taught me so much and not just the stuff that we had to know for school/classes. He listened and counseled when there was an issue that was affecting me mentally. He could tell when any one of us were having a "challanging" time. My heartfelt prayers go out to your family. God Bless Judie (Drollinger) Arellanes

The man and teacher many knew simply as “Mr. Bryant.” He was one of the finest teachers many of us had during our High School experience. He touched so many lives in a positive way. He made a difference in this world and he will live on in all of us who were lucky enough to be one of his students.

Millie, so sorry for your loss. Always enjoyed talking to Mike but mostly enjoyed his laughter & zest for life. Peace & memories to fill your heart is my prayer for you.

From a poem by John O'Donohue... Though we need to weep your loss, You dwell in that safe place in our hearts, Where no storm or might or pain can reach you. We look towards each other no longer From the old distance of our names; Now you dwell inside the rhythm of breath, As close to us as we are to ourselves. Though we cannot see you with outward eyes, We know our soul’s gaze is upon your face, Smiling back at us from within everything To which we bring our best refinement. Let us not look for you only in memory, Where we would grow lonely without you. You would want us to find you in presence, Beside us when beauty brightens, When kindness glows And music echoes eternal tones. When orchids brighten the earth, Darkest winter has turned to spring; May this dark grief flower with hope In every heart that loves you. May you continue to inspire us: To enter each day with a generous heart. To serve the call of courage and love Until we see your beautiful face again In that land where there is no more separation, Where all tears will be wiped from our mind, And where we will never lose you again.
