Obituary For Michael "Mike" Patrick Souza

Michael ‘Mike’ Souza, husband, father and grandfather, passed away on November 7, 2018 surrounded by his family.

Born on March 13th, 1950 in Oakland, Ca to Gilbert and Alice Souza. Mike grew up in San Leandro and was a graduate of Pacific High School. After graduation, Mike served in the 1st Battalion, 27th Artillery unit of the U.S. Army in Vietnam. While serving his country, Mike earned the Bronze Star for heroism in combat, the Army’s fourth highest honor. After returning home, Mike joined the Union City Fire Department in 1973, where he served his community for 31 years, ultimately retiring as a Battalion Chief in 2004.

In 1973, Mike married the love of his life, Vicki. Married for 45 years, Mike and Vicki lived in Union City, Ca, where they raised their children. Mike was known as the ultimate family man, someone who always put his wife, children and grandchildren above everything else. Mike had a passion for restoring classic cars, camping, fishing, and spending time restoring his family cabins. He was also known for his ability to do and fix anything…from concrete to electrical he was a jack of all trades. Mike is survived by his wife Vicki and his three children, Mia, Travis and Kelly. Mike was a proud grandfather of nine; Jessica, Sara, Hannah, Emily, Jackson, Brayden, Ashley, Tysen and Allison and great-grandfather of Elijah, with another great-grandson on the way. A celebration of Mike’s life will be held on Sunday, January 13th, 2019 at the Ruggieri Center located at 33997 Alvarado-Niles Road in Union City, California. The event is an open-house format, from noon to 4pm.

I have fond memories of Mike, jokester, loving , supportive, always a pleasure seeing him come by the PD. First met him when I was working in dispatch. Sometimes heâd come by with a box of ice creams to hand out to everyone in the station or come by with invite to breakfast at fire station. Just like his son feeding our sweet tooth and always had a infectious smile..Even after he retired he still came by and we had time to chat and laugh. So honored to have Known him..

I first met Mike when I was a probationary FF with the UCFD. On my first meeting with Mike he asked me what the most important address was in Union City?? I didnât know quite how to answer the question I was new and I was nervous, so I think I replied this Fire Station 33555 Central Ave, Mike quickly replied âNope 2522 Robin Ctâ and donât forget it kid!!! That was Mike!! He wanted everyone to know where his family lived and showed everyday how important they were to him!! Itâs been 34 years and I think I still got the address right. Thatâs the kind of lasting impact Michael P had on a bunch of us young guys.

We are so saddened to have recently learned of the passing of Mike. He was a man with a big heart and always willing to lend a helping hand expecting nothing in return.
