Obituary For Richard "Dick" Oliver
Dick Oliver, 82, of Hayward, California, passed away peacefully on February 23.
Dick was born to Cecilia Ruiz and Richard Oliver in Oakland and grew up in San Leandro. As a young man working as a gas station attendant, one of his regular customers, Aleen Farnan, introduced him to her daughter. Less than a year later, Dick married Nancy Farnan. The couple spent 62 years together.
Dick worked for Standard Oil and then served several terms as President of the service station employee’s union. He left the union to go into business for himself, owning a Shell station and co-owning a Goodyear Tire store. Ultimately, he decided to get his real estate license and spent over 30 years as a Real Estate Broker.
Dick believed in serving the community. He spent almost 20 years as a Council Member and Mayor of Union City. Dick loved to read cookbooks and try new recipes. He looked for opportunities to meet new people. Often, Dick would strike up a conversation with random strangers and end with a new friend. He enjoyed bowling, watching baseball, and spending time with his family.
Dick is survived by his wife, Nancy Oliver, his sister and her husband, Donna and Joe Vannucci, his children and their spouses, Richard and Janice Oliver, Robert and Gigi Oliver, and Cathryn Oliver Brown and William Brown, his grandchildren, Matthew and Elizabeth Chapman, Thomas and Kathryn Chapman, Giana Oliver, Elisabeth Oliver, Caitlyn Oliver Brown, Kenneth Oliver, Richard Brown, Isabel Oliver, and David Oliver Brown, and his great grandchildren, Tyler Chapman and Tanner Chapman. He was predeceased by his son, Thomas Oliver.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2pm at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 703 C Street, Union City.
