Obituary For Richard Warren Cary

Entered into rest on May , 2012 in Hayward at the age of 43. Beloved son of Peggy and Richard Cary, Sr. of Chico. Treasured brother of Mary and David McLaughlin of Chico, and Stacy and Richard Sharp of Greer, SC. Dear uncle of Rachel, Ashley, Sarah, Paul, and RJ. Also survived by grand-niece Chloe, and grand-nephew Kade.

Born May 5, 1969 in Livermore, Rik spent his first 10 years in Forest Lake, Minnesota. When he returned to California Rik attended Leigh High School in San Jose, graduated with Honors from De Anza College where he met and married Heather O'Brian, moving on to the University of California Santa Cruz, where he graduated Summa cum Laude. He worked for B.Dalton, Oddson, Hasbraugh, and Alere.

He was an avid member of the Halloween Haunt Club. Every year he decorated his home in Hayward and nearly 500 kids would visit each Halloween. Rik's website www.perfessorevil.com contains the posted videos of his Halloweens through the years. Contrary to his playful "perfessorevil" persona, he was truly kind and loving man.

His facebook page (facebook.com/rik.cary) is filled with tributes and remembrances. If you were a friend or relative of Rik's and have not connected on Facebook, please send a friend request. You will be accepted and have access to what this very special man meant to so many people.

Rik established and maintained the web site http://www.hauntproject.com/, which has become a major resource for people in the Haunt community nationwide and even worldwide.

A celebration of Rik's life will be held on Thursday, May 31st at 2pm at Fremont Memorial Chapel. This is located at 3723 Peralta Boulevard in Fremont, CA. You are welcome to attend. If you do plan on attending, please let us know by sending email to dickc1@yahoo.com. Please use a subject of RSVP. Thanks

I had the pleasure of working with Rik many moons ago and have always had fond memories of his humor and stress-free approach to life. I think it is said best below...he was a kind and gentle man...with a brilliant sense of humor. The loss of Rik is tremendous, and my sympathies go out to his family. I wish him eternal peace and I am thankful to have known him.

I remember you so well and am very saddened by your early passing. Peggy and Dick I love you both and will support you as best I can.

I am so sorry for your loss. Rik was a good friend and we met at Alere when he started in 2001. I enjoyed working with him and I am pretty sure he enjoyed working with me too :), even though he would jokingly complain about my many data requests. He always took the time to help me figure out what I needed. He taught me how to precisely ask for data. In the past several years, he and I both worked from home and there was comfort knowing that we were still with Alere even though we didn't see each other often. Rik will be greatly missed

Rik was always there for us newbies when we joined Calhaunts. He had endless patience, was full of humor and was always kind. Rik could always be counted on to share some information, give suggestions or directions. The conversations we shared will always be treasured. We miss you so much already. Our condolences to his family.

CREATING THE ILLLUSIONEarly on Rik demonstrated a flair for the dramatic and making an impression. A fond and humorous memory of Rik is at a Cary family reunion in Northern Wisconsin when he was about about 14 or 15 years old. It was on or around the 4th of July, and the fireworks were canceled due to a terrible rainstorm. (In fact, a tornado damaged the roof of the restaurant we were in while we were having dinner). So all 17 or 18 of us huddled inside this restaurant having dinner and were spread out across a long table. At the far end, sat Rik and the babysitter, whom I think became his first love. Unbeknownst to any of us, even though he was underage, he ?ordered a bottle of champagne for just the two of them?. Only to be outed when they set up a stand for the champagne bucket! Presentation counts....... obviously he became a master of that by devoting his time, passion, and talent as Rik ?Perfessorevil Cary, creating an unforgettable experience for hundreds of trick or treaters. He will live on in their memories and he will live on in ours. Uncle Tom and Aunt Sue (Cary) Acklam

I was so sad to hear of Rik's passing. I didn't know him well but attended several parties with he and colleagues from Alere. He was a fun guy and a kick in the pants! He was well known for the antics on Halloween and for his hearse. I wish the best for his family at this difficult time. Judy Lloyd (Tim's wife)

Dick & Peggy, Having Rik for a neighbor was GREAT he liked to tease the whole neighborhood he would start decorating Oct,1 he would put out 1 or 2 things a day it seemed like. Everyone around here would drive by real slow or walk the sidewalk to see what he added and I would look out daily to see what was new then he would give us all a treat when he would add a bunch at one time. I would try to keep up with him doing my yard. Rik always smiled and waved when he would come out to get the mail. I will miss him my heart goes out to the two of you. g

My husband Jim and I met Rik and Heather on a Bloody Mary Cruise. Rik and I were always going to figure out if we were related (my grandmother's maiden name was Cary), but sadly never did. A few weeks ago, on his birthday, he told me he was adopting me as a cousin. Such a kind and gentle man, I am proud to call him friend and "cousin." He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
