Obituary For Ronald J. Rebello, Sr.

After multiple years of battling illness, Ron passed away at home on June 21, 2023. He was 80 years old.

Ron was born September 22, 1942, to his parents Jerry and Sylvia and was the 5th of 6 children. He was born, raised, and lived his entire life in the Niles district of Fremont. He loved Niles and told countless stories throughout his life about growing up there with friends and family.

Ron attended Washington High School in Fremont for three years and finished at James Logan High School from where he graduated in 1960. He played high school football and baseball, and was the MVP on the baseball team his senior year.

In February 1965, Ron married his high school sweetheart and fellow Niles resident, Christine Burgess. They bought a house in Niles where they remained for the last 56 years raising their children and doting on their grandchildren.

Ron along with his brothers, Stan and Bill, went into business together and bought their first grocery store in Niles named Rebello’s Market in 1973. The Rebello brothers opened five more locations over the next 10 years. In 1986, they sold the neighborhood stores and opened a Food 4 Less in Newark. When they retired in 1999, they sold their business which included a total of eight Food 4 Less stores in multiple locations across Northern and Central California.

Ron loved classic 50’s cars, Elvis Presley, and was a huge sports fan who supported the 49ers, SF Giants, and Warriors. He was on his high school reunion committee for 30 years and cherished catching up with classmates and friends.

More than anything, Ron loved to be with his family. He was a devoted son and brother who valued family traditions and gatherings. He was happiest when he was with his children and grandchildren. The family often gathered for a day of swimming and BBQ in his backyard followed by card games and dominos. An annual summer vacation in Hawaii with his wife, children, and grandchildren showcased his funny, loving, and generous spirit. These Hawaiian vacations created memories that will be treasured forever.

Ron was preceded in death by his father Jerry, his mother Sylvia, brothers Stan and Bill, and sisters Elaine and Geri. He is survived by wife Chris, children Ron Jr. along with his wife Krista, Cassie and her partner Mark, and Ryan and his partner Brittanie. He is also survived by his grandchildren Alex, Lucas, Hannah, Natalie, and Lilia, his sister Joyce, and many nieces and nephews.

Dad and Grandad, you were loved deeply and will be greatly missed.
