Obituaries

Born on March 12th, 1920 in Oakland, CA, and entered into rest on November 14th, 2016 in Fremont, CA at the age of 96. Survived by his daughters: Joana Trigueros (Cesar), and Verna Cabral-King; grandsons: Frank Trigueros (Lauren), and Thomas Trigueros; great-grandchildren: Peyton, Joaquin, and Cruz; sister Elaine Stansell; and brother Stanley Cabral (Dolores). Proceeded in death by his wife of 50 years Isaura Cabral.

Vernon, a humble man from a very large Portuguese family attended Castlemont H.S. in Oakland until the 10th grade. He worked for Del Monte Packing Company in Oakland prior to entry into the U.S. Army on 15, November 1941.

Vernon trained as a connoneer and deployed to the European, African, and Middle Eastern Theater on 29 January 1944. He was assigned to the 474th Automatic Weapons (AAA) and participated in the invasion of France, landing on Utah Beach 7 June 1944. As a connoneer he was a member of a Half-track 5-man crew and he worked as loader, operator and gunner of the quad 50 caliber machine guns, against enemy Aircraft, fortifications and ground forces. His unit was involved in engagements from France thru the Low Countries, the Ardennes and on into central Germany on VE day.

On 1 October 1945 he embarked from France and was Honorably discharge on 18 October 1945.

He married Isaura Vieira 20 May 1950. In 1953 he started working for General Motors in Oakland, when GM moved to Fremont in 1963 he stayed with them and retired when the plant closed 1982. He enjoyed his retirement attending Portuguese Festas and specially to Portugal and Brazil.

When Isaura passed in 2000 he went to live with his daughter Joana and her family in Tracy, CA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 20th, from 1-5pm with a Rosary at 3pm at Fremont Chapel of the Roses, 1940 Peralta Blvd., Fremont, CA 94536. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 21st, 10:30am at St. Edward's Catholic Church, 5788 Thornton Ave., Newark, CA 94560. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward, CA.
