Obituary For Vivian Marie Costa

Vivian died peacefully, with her daughters by her side, on January 6, 2020 after a 4 year battle with Alzheimer’s. She is survived by her daughters Kathy Kitterman and Janet Johannsen (Tom); Grandchildren Kim Bosque, Erin Caeton (Neil), Kyle Johannsen and Kevin Kitterman; Great Grandchildren Makenna and Josh Bosque, Lilia and Nora Caeton.

Vivian was born April 9, 1927, in Fremont, CA to Anthony and Marie Rose. She was a graduate of Washington High School in Fremont, and San Jose State University. She was a lifelong active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. After marrying Clifford “Bud” Costa in July 1949, they settled in Fremont, where she remained until Alzheimer’s made it impossible to live on her own. At that time she moved to Livermore to be near her daughters.

During her early years, Vivian worked at Centerville Post Office while going to school, Bank of America after college, and Kimber Farms as a statistician. After the birth of their first daughter, Vivian became a full-time homemaker taking fastidious care of her family. Viv, Bud and the girls took many family road trips through the years. Later, after the girls graduated college, they ventured on more exotic vacations to Hawaii and Europe. After Bud’s passing in 1982 (age 56), Vivian became primary caretaker for 12 years to her mother who was suffering from Alzheimer’s.

Vivian was a true and loyal friend to many. She enjoyed breakfast and lunch dates with friends and family through the years. The longest stint being breakfast with her “knit club” group for 40+ years…which she still attended until September of 2019 when her health made it impossible. She was a woman who was loved and respected by many for her kind and selfless ways.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 37588 Fremont Blvd., Fremont. Reception to follow. Private family burial.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made in Vivian’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.

Geoff and I send our deepest condolences to Janet, Kathy and all the family as they mourn Vivian's passing. Vivian has been a constant presence in my life--every special event in my life growing up included her, Bud, Janet and Kathy. So many parties, so many graduation celebrations and weddings, so many joyous events! I will always remember her fondly and the gracious way she greeted me and took an interest in my life and the life of every member of my family. She is finally reunited with Bud. I'll be traveling for work next week but our thoughts will be with all of you as you mourn her loss and celebrate her life and the family she was the matriarch of. God bless and keep her.
